Village halls perform a wonderful service for our communities but all of them need to work hard to continue that good work.

Bigrigg Hall is regularly used by Brownies, a Bridge Club, a Ladies’ Circle, and local youth football teams, who use the field attached to the hall for training and matches, with occasional bookings by locals for parties. Occasional professionally-run functions, as well as fund-raising events and infrequent one-off lettings to other groups also provide a valuable service as well as income. A dog training club also meets there.

Mike Brewer, a keen supporter of the hall, said: “In recent years the Village Hall Committee has worked hard to raise funds and keep the hall in decent shape, and secured grants which enabled them to renew the kitchen and pursue other refurbishment projects; but a number of the stalwarts of the committee have unfortunately been lost – and now , critically, the treasurer will be leaving next month. In general the Committee needs new blood – but vitally it needs someone as treasurer, without which it obviously can’t function.

“It’s not a big job (the Hall’s annual income is below £10,000) but essentially someone is needed to sign cheques, receive cheques and keep records of both. Treasurers (like the outgoing one) may sometimes do more than that (e.g. negotiate with tradesmen, apply for aid, etc.), but the urgent need is for someone who will do the basic job. At the moment, though, the committee is sadly diminished and there’s no one on it in a position to do this. I do believe, however, that it’s a job that should be undertaken by someone resident in the Bigrigg area, or with close links to it (family etc) and who has some familiarity with the needs of Bigrigg.”

Mike is secretary of the Bridge Club – a popular club with 38 members. They are all acutely aware of how important it is for the Bigrigg Hall to continue operating smoothly.
