E2D to cease trading

IT is with much regret that Egremont2Day has decided to cease trading.

The community newspaper has served the Egremont and Cleator Moor areas for 28 years. As a not-for-profit company, it has been the voice of the community and raised thousands of pounds for local charities.

The directors would like to thank the advertisers, readers and volunteers for their long-serving support.

The decision was not taken lightly but came about from a shrinking volunteer workforce, especially those with specific skills and a rise in production costs that would have been difficult to meet through advertising revenue.

Any monies left over once the small number of debts have been repaid will, as has always been the case, be given to local charities.

The Chairman Tony Dunning said: “This a very sad day but it was a decision the directors felt was the right one at this particular time.”

Egremont2Day was founded in 1990 by former teacher Peter Watson as a voice for the Labour party and it quickly became the ‘glue that held a community together’. When the Labour party decided to end its association with the paper, Peter continued with a band of willing volunteers. In Peter’s own words, he wanted it to be ‘the voice of the community, celebrating the amazing achievements of its children and reinforcing its self-belief’.

E2D was initially printed in Peter Watson’s garage and grew over the years to become a monthly colour paper at the forefront of local news. It distributed to 13,000 homes in Egremont, Cleator Moor and District edited by Rachael Grealish.
Founder Peter Watson died in 2014 at the age of 78. He was still working on the paper up until his death.

Update: 5th July 2018:

Many thanks to all those who have been in touch with messages of support and/or queries regarding unpublished adverts,

We will, in due course, be refunding all those advertisers who have unused credit. However the Administrators need first to chase up debtors to the company, before we, in turn, clear our debts to our creditors. We are hoping to be able to do this by November 2018. May I ask you for patience in this.
