Read Write Inc. Phonics is a reading and writing programme created by Ruth Miskin and published by Oxford University Press, which Orgill School adopted four years ago.

Julie Irving, headteacher of Orgill Primary School, said: “To be appointed as a model school for Read Write Inc. is really exciting for us.  We are the only model school in Cumbria and we look forward to sharing our good practice and inspiring other schools.”

In 2014, Orgill School’s results placed them in the top 5% of schools nationally.

Mrs Irving said: “Our results in the national phonics screening check for Year 1 pupils are consistently well above national average.

“Staff are incredibly passionate about the programme and this shows in the quality of teaching.  Children love the structure of the lessons and the fact that they are highly interactive. “

There are only 60 Read Write Inc. UK Model Schools, all of which have transformed their teaching by implementing the whole school approach advocated in Read Write Inc. Phonics.

Ruth Miskin said: “I am so thrilled that the children in Orgill Primary School are making such fast progress. Model Schools are vital in our drive to help children in other schools make the same progress.”

All Model Schools are keen for teachers from local schools to observe their lessons to see first hand the impact Read Write Inc. has had on results, behaviour and pupil engagement.

Lisa Fielding, Oxford University Press Educational Consultant  for Cumbria, said: “It has been fantastic to see the school develop and flourish, it’s great that other schools in the area can visit and see their brilliant Read Write Inc. lessons in action.”
