Facing a hectic schedule throughout April and in order to complete this season’s Cumbria League program, Egremont decided to move their final two matches to a Wednesday night.

The club is very appreciative that both visiting sides were happy to accommodate the changes.

Midweek floodlit matches have generally proved to be an attractive option for local rugby supporters and, as the kick off time approached for the Workington game on Wednesday, April 18, this was once again the case with a full car park and touchline at Bleach Green.

Egremont have played a judicious blend of the Under 18 squad and established senior players in the latter stages of this season as the club plans for the future.

Against Workington this was used to devastating effect, as the home side played at a pace which the visitors found difficult to match.

The speed and ambition of the youthful Egremont back division allowed the more senior Adam Barton to score a hat trick of tries on the right wing in a performance full of power, pace and controlled aggression which made him almost unstoppable on the day.

Egremont’s open and flowing brand of front-foot rugby continued throughout the evening as they scored a total of eight tries to Workington’s three for an impressive bonus point win by 50-17.

The following Wednesday, April 25, was a different matter altogether however, as Carlisle 2 arrived with a side full of physicality and power which proved too much for the young Egremont side to handle.

The visitors dominated the breakdown in particular and as a result on this occasion Egremont were forced onto the back foot as they battled to contain an impressive Carlisle outfit.

A final score of 36-10 to Carlisle could have closed Egremont’s season on a downbeat note.

However, they have proved throughout March and April that Bleach Green will be an exciting place to watch rugby again in the coming season, as the club begins to harness the immense range of talent coming up through the high-achieving youth section at the club.

On Friday, May 25, Egremont RUFC will be hosting a highly attractive event at the clubhouse when Great Britain and England rugby league legend Adrian Morley will be speaking at a pie-and peas supper hosted by the inimitable Howard Nicholson and also supported by a top quality comedian.

Tickets are priced at £25, and are available from organiser Marc Long by calling him on 07966 392947.
