WHITEHAVEN will be dancing along to Jolan as part of a £30,000 six-week Christmas extravaganza.

The town is set to be transformed into a winter wonderland to celebrate the Christmas light switch-on.

Whitehaven’s festivities kick off on Sunday November 20, as The Voice finalist and Moor Row lad, Jolan, is set to press the button to switch on the lights at 5pm on the day.

Along with Jolan, CFM will be on hand to provide entertainment on the day.

Jolan will also perform a concert at Whitehaven Civic Hall later that evening – in partnership with Rosehill Theatre Group.

Kids will get the chance to meet their favourite super-heroes and pose with their favourite princesses as they patrol the streets.

But that isn’t quite the main event – on Saturday November 26 the community has been told to get their skates on as St Nicholas’ Church gardens are transformed into a winter wonderland – including an ice rink, snow machine and Christmas tunes for six weeks.

This is all part of the Whitehaven Christmas extravaganza, which hopes to attract people from as far north as Carlisle and as far south as Barrow.

Schools are also being encouraged to use the ice rink free of charge during term time.

Whitehaven’s Christmas Extravaganza will kick off on Sunday November 20 with the Christmas light switch-on and a performance by Jolan

Egremont Winter Wonderland

LIGHTS, elves, superheroes and even meerkats are heading to West Cumbria for Egremont’s Winter Wonderland.

After the unfortunate effects of lasts year’s storms caused the Egremont Town Council to cancel their Christmas event they promise this year’s Christmas light switch-on will be back bigger and better than ever.

The event, taking place on Sunday November 27, in Egremont, is set to kick off with Bookwell Primary school choir singing along to Egremont Town Band’s performance on Egremont main street.

Pete Moss from CFM will be there along with lots of local talent including D’Bleedin Blaggards, Step by Step dancers and Whitehaven Theatre Group, who will be giving audience members a sneaky preview of their Christmas pantomime.

A festive petting zoo was due to make a much anticipated appearance last year – and as not to disappoint is returning this year giving youngsters the opportunity to cuddle a meerkat or even brave the tarantula.

Superheroes, such as Batman and Superman, and princesses will be patrolling the streets to keep them safe – and pose for photos with the kids.

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a visit from Santa and he’ll be waiting in his grotto, with his two elves – who have been given time off their toy-making duties to help Santa – to greet all the children and listen to their Christmas wishes.

Along with 60 stalls – selling a wide variety of goods from food to Christmas gifts – the event will also feature more rides for the children to enjoy as well as a large snow globe – so get your family and friends together for a photograph inside the globe.

The organisers thanked everyone who supported and donated to help the free light switch on go ahead.

The event will finish in a true celebratory fashion as fireworks are set to go off with the switching on of the lights.

Mr Gary Mayson, from Mayson Bros, has been a major contributor at all of the Egremont events and will be switching on the Egremont lights.
