THE Gaiety Cinema in Whitehaven has only been re-opened for eight months but has already undergone a renovation, with the introduction of a large lounge area.

Adjacent to the foyer and kiosk, the new cinema lounge was created from a previous storage and office area and involved demolishing walls, installing new toilets and revealing and restoring an original parquet floor.

The new area complements the 1920’s building, including original cinema seating, but also boasts contemporary décor, tables and chairs. Vintage cinema posters adorn the walls.

Customers can use the area for pre or post film drinks, with beers, wines, freshly ground coffee and teas available, as well as soft drinks and snacks.

Commenting on the revamp and new programme, Gaiety Cinema Marketing Manager, Charlotte Kennedy, said: “We’re delighted with our newly revealed lounge area and hope that it will add to the whole cinematic experience at the Gaiety. Customers can now comfortably enjoy a chat and a drink with friends before going into the cinema or discuss the ‘best bits’ of their chosen movie after the film has finished.”

The opening of the new area coincides with the launch of live broadcasts from theatres, ballets and operas, allowing customers the chance to view performances they may never normally get the chance to see. The first live broadcast was Richard III, live from the Almeida Theatre, London, starring Ralph Fiennes and Vanessa Redgrave. This was followed by classical maestro Andre Riéu and his 2016 Maastricht concert. A second Andre Riéu concert – Christmas with Andre – is planned for 19th November.

Other live events lined up for the Gaiety are Opera Australia’s performance of Turnadot and ‘The Fairy Tale Series’ including The Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Coppélia, performed by the stunning Australian Ballet.
