WITH the weather getting warmer it’s a fantastic time to take up a new hobby – and Egremont Bowling Club has just the thing to keep you active this coming summer.

The Egremont Town Bowling Green opened for its new season on April 16, welcoming new faces and friends the opportunity to take part in a unique sport.

Bowls is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a ‘jack’ or ‘kitty’. It is played on a bowling green, like the one found on Howbank Road in Egremont.

Jim Wise, chairman of Egremont Bowling Club said: “It’s going to be a really good season and we’d really like to see some more younger get involved. We’re always looking for new faces and ages, we would hate to see it closed if it was unused.”

Mr Wise explained the benefits of taking part in bowls.
He said: “It’s a really good way to keep active, but also it’s actually a very interesting sport and a really fantastic way to socialise with more people in the community.”

Mr Wise has been with the club for almost ten years, but has been playing bowls since 1964. Now at 93 he said he enjoys being part of the club too much to ever stop.

The Egremont Bowling Green opened in 1982 and has become a hidden gem in the community.

The green is open seven days a week from 2pm until 6pm.

So why not see if this is the new activity to brighten up your summer?
