Lakes College students take up residency

Students from Lakes College’s Art and Design course are holding a residency at Florence Arts Centre.

For two weeks Florence Arts Centre will be the venue for a unique artists’ residency from students on Lakes College’s Art and Design courses.

Starting on Monday, March 12 the student will spend two weeks at the arts centre, based in the converted miners’ shower block building at Florence Mine in Egremont.

The residency will give the students a chance to develop new work inspired by the industrial surroundings, the location and the site of the old iron ore mine and the thriving arts centre on the edge of the Lake District.

Using found objects, photography, film and a diverse variety of media including the centre’s own Egremont Red range of artists’ material the work will be site-specific and created organically during the residency.

Visitors to the centre between 12 and 23 March will be able to see the work-in- progress and meet the students.

Following the residency the work will be exhibited in the centre’s gallery for a fortnight, opening with a special preview evening on Friday, March 23 6pm to 9pm.

Florence Arts Centre will be open Monday to Sunday during the residency period and from Wednesday to Sunday, as normal, for the free exhibition.
