Students from St. Benedict’s School, Whitehaven, have been helped to a national award thanks to Florence Paintmakers.

The students came runners-up in a national education award to design a ball mill for grinding haematite, slate and sandstone to produce paint.

They worked with Florence Paintmakers of Egremont. Jenni Payne from Florence Paintmakers said: “We are really delighted to hear that the students have done so well in this national competition – they worked very hard to achieve this superb result and we are very grateful.

We’ve been making artists’ paints with the haematite from Florence Mine and this mill will now enable us to try out other local pigments to produce a range of different colours. A project which is truly transformative for our co-operative!”
