The English team at West Lakes Academy took home to the gold as they were awarded ‘Outstanding School Team of the Year’ at the 2015 Pearson Teaching Awards.

Thousands of schools from all over the UK had took part in the competition but it was West Lakes that shone brightly for Cumbria at the award ceremony which took place at London’s Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on Sunday, October 18.

Head of English at the Academy, Melissa Relph said: “We are over the moon to receive an award for a job we love doing. Honoured to serve our young people and we love working at West Lakes Academy.”

West Lakes have also been in front of the camera’s earlier this month as a BBC2 TV crew filmed the teachers in action as part of their programme; Britain’s Classroom Heroes.

Academy principal, Vanessa Ray nominated the team for the award she said: “I am absolutely thrilled for the team, they have had a fantastic year and truly deserve this award. We are all incredibly proud of them.”

In her nomination Mrs Ray wrote: “The English team at West Lakes Academy care deeply about each and every student that studies English. The staff have a passion for instilling, within all of the Academy’s learners, a thirst for knowledge and have a real drive to create independent thinkers and exemplary communicators.”
